Partnership with ESG Solutions enhances underground mining with new-age seismic data-to-surface monitoring

Underground mining has always posed significant challenges in terms of safety, efficiency, and communication. Known as one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, underground mining accounts for only one percent of the global labor force but eight percent of all fatal accidents, according to Chart Industries. Now, at the hands of two industry-leading companies, the job just got a whole lot safer.

Imagine being able to monitor the movements of underground mines in real-time, ensuring the safety of miners and optimizing operations. It’s not science fiction. A partnership between Rajant Corporation and ESG Solutions puts the industry on the cusp of a significant transformation. Testing of next-generation seismic and micro-seismic data-to-surface monitoring for underground mines has been successfully completed at Canada’s NORCAT health and safety center.

The game-changer: Rajant Kinetic Mesh wireless network, paired with Precision Time Protocol (PTP) testing put in place by ESG. This dynamic technology partnership enables seamless data transfer from the depths of the mine to the surface, providing miners with real-time insights to make data-driven decisions.

Let’s dive into the key aspects of this breakthrough and the implications for the future of mining.

The Successful Testing: A Milestone Achievement

The partnership between Rajant, a leader in wireless networking technology, and ESG Solutions, a pioneer in seismic monitoring, marks a significant milestone in the evolution of underground mine safety technology. Their combined expertise aimed to enhance the transfer of seismic and micro-seismic data from deep within mines to surface instruments, ensuring real-time monitoring and improved safety measures.

Traditionally, underground mines rely on fiber optic cables to transmit sensor data to the surface. However, this approach is often limited by the need for physical infrastructure, which can be time-consuming and costly to install. Wireless solutions, on the other hand, offer unparalleled flexibility and scalability.

When it comes to PTP, it does not perform well on unreliable networks and wireless networks, especially mobile ones. They are notoriously unreliable – but not Rajant’s. With Rajant Kinetic Mesh and ESG, their PTP testing leads the way for underground miners to unlock the full potential of their operations – eliminating the need for cumbersome fiber optic cables and improving safety, efficiency, and productivity like never before.

New Era in Underground Mining: Rajant’s Low Latency and High-Reliability Enable Wireless PTP for Large-Scale Automation

By harnessing the power of wireless data transfer and PTP synchronization, miners can now access real-time insights that were previously unavailable.

The successful testing would not have been possible without both sides of the puzzle: ESG and Rajant. Their collaboration allows PTP to perform properly, ensuring that all devices in the network are synchronized to within a few microseconds of each other. This is particularly important in mining, where the precise timing of commands and assets can significantly impact operational efficiency and safety. On the other hand, Rajant Kinetic Mesh wireless is known for its low latency and high reliability. This network is ideal for environments where continuous, uninterrupted communication is critical.

As Darrell Gillis, Sales Director for Canada at Rajant, notes, “Both PTP and wireless communications are critical for large-scale automation. Rajant’s extremely low latency and high reliability are essential for enabling wireless PTP over multi-hop, mobile wireless networks.”

Real-Life Applications

So, what does this mean for underground mines? The advancements demonstrated by Rajant and ESG Solutions have far-reaching implications for the mining industry. As these technologies are adopted more widely, we can expect to see significant improvements in safety, efficiency, and overall operational effectiveness in mines worldwide.

In practical terms, Rajant Kinetic Mesh enables wireless transmission of data packets from sensors at remote areas of the underground levels to the closest fiber switch at the substation or shaft station. This means that miners can:

  • Monitor seismic activity in real-time, allowing them to respond quickly to potential hazards
  • Optimize ventilation and lighting systems for improved air quality and visibility
  • Enhance communication between different levels of the mine
  • Reduce energy consumption by optimizing power usage

The successful testing of next-generation seismic and micro-seismic data-to-surface monitoring by Rajant Corporation and ESG Solutions marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of underground mining. With the integration of Precision Time Protocol over Rajant Kinetic Mesh wireless networking, the mining industry is poised to achieve unprecedented levels of safety, productivity, and security. As we look forward to MINExpo 2024, the future of mining looks brighter and more innovative than ever.
